The NFL offseason became a little more intriguing with Joey Bosa's sudden release by the Los Angeles Chargers on March 5. While it helps the Chargers save $25 million against the cap, it sets up the potential for that long-discussed reunion as well—playing with his younger brother, Nick Bosa, with the San Francisco 49ers.

And no one appears to be more thrilled about the prospect than their mother, Cheryl Bosa.

Cheryl Bosa Urges Return of the Bosa Brothers to the Field

Cheryl, a Fort Lauderdale luxury real estate agent, wasted no time coming out in support of her sons sharing the playing field in San Francisco. She reposted on Instagram a fan-made Story with the hashtag urging the 49ers to sign Joey, which included an animated edit of the brothers in St. Thomas Aquinas High School jerseys.

"Can we start a petition on getting [Joey Bosa] to the Bay?" the Story's caption reads, using the hashtag #BosaBrothers. Both Joey and Nick's handles are also tagged.

That would not be the first time that Cheryl has publicly shared her sons' football odysseys. Shortly after Joey's release was made public, her heart spilled over in an Instagram Story, reposting the Chargers tribute post with the caption: "Could not be prouder of my son, Joey."

Joey and Nick Bosa's NFL Careers

Joey, 29, was a first-round draft choice of the Chargers in the 2016 NFL Draft and emerged as a dominant presence on their defensive line. He made several Pro Bowl appearances and was universally regarded as one of the league's top-edge rushers over eight seasons.

Nick, 27, also took a similar route, drafted second overall by the 49ers in 2019. He also became an elite pass rusher, taking home NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and assisting in guiding San Francisco to several playoff appearances and two Super Bowl runs.

The only time the Bosa brothers have played together was in 2012 at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida. Could the NFL finally see a reunion?

Would the 49ers Make the Move?

While fans are enthusiastic about the Bosa brothers' future collaboration, the 49ers would need to weigh a number of things before making a move for Joey, according to People. He is talented, but his recent injuries and possible salary requirements may prove difficult to overcome.

San Francisco already has one of the league's best defenses, and the addition of Joey would make it a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Yet, the 49ers would have to figure out how to make the math work under their current salary cap structure.

A Family of Football Greats

Football greatness is hereditary in the Bosa family. In a 2019 San Francisco Chronicle interview, Cheryl referred to her sons' on-field success as "a genetic phenomenon." Their late grandfather, Palmer Pyle, played for three NFL teams in the 1960s. Pyle's brother, Mike, won a Super Bowl with the Chicago Bears.

Given such a strong football heritage, it shouldn't come as a shock that Cheryl is advocating for her sons to join forces in San Francisco.

Will the Bosa Brothers Return to San Francisco?

For the time being, the rumor is just that—a rumor. But as free agency progresses, the notion of Joey playing for the 49ers is becoming a real possibility.

If San Francisco manages to pull it off, the Bosa brothers might form one of the most feared defensive pairs in NFL history.
