Victor Wembanyama is one of many generational talents we've seen in the NBA. A legend in the making, the San Antonio Spurs' center became the youngest player to produce 33 points, 15 rebounds, seven blocks, and seven assists on March 13, 2024, against the Nets.
Wemby, 21, has become one of the most recognizable big men of this era. He often posts absurd numbers we haven't seen before. Recently, he made another history after surpassing Hakeem Olajuwon in the blocks streak.
Wembanyama's All-Star Season Improves His Status
In just his second year in the NBA, Wembanyama has already solidified himself as an all-around force. Averaging 24.4 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and an NBA-leading 3.9 blocks per game, the young Frenchman earned his first All-Star selection, according to Sports Illustrated.
His defensive dominance has also made him the overwhelming favorite for the 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year award, as he continues to shut down opponents with his shot-blocking ability.
Although Wembanyama won the 2023-2024 Rookie of the Year Award, the 7-foot-3 cager thought that he "could do more than that," making it one of his regrets in his early days.
Breaking Records: Wembanyama Passes Hakeem Olajuwon
On Wednesday night, the Spurs took on the Boston Celtics, facing a tough challenge against one of the league's top teams. Despite trailing by 19 points at halftime, Wembanyama once again proved that everyone should seriously deal with him.
With an early block against the Celtics, Wembanyama extended his streak to 85 consecutive games with at least one block, surpassing NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon for the fifth-longest streak in league history.
Only Patrick Ewing, Mark Eaton, and Dikembe Mutombo have recorded longer streaks, further including Wembanyama's name among the greatest defenders in NBA history.
Defensive Dominance: The Next Defensive Player of the Year?
Leading the NBA in blocks for two consecutive seasons, Wembanyama has already become the most feared rim protector in the league. His ability to contest shots, guard multiple positions, and change the game defensively makes him a nightmare for opposing teams.
Given his current trajectory, he is likely to be a Defensive Player of the Year contender every season for the foreseeable future.
Spurs Struggles, But Wembanyama Continues to Shine
While San Antonio is currently 23-28 and struggling to stay competitive, Wembanyama remains a bright spot for the franchise. The Spurs are working out on their chemistry, and if that does good, they could at least be included in the Western Conference playoffs.
Wemby is also the first player in NBA history to reach 42 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, four blocks, and seven three-pointers in a single game.
Meanwhile, Wemby's former Metropolitans 92 teammate Bilal Couilibaly said that he was impressed with his friend's skills, but not "too impressed."
Couilibaly, being a childhood friend to Wembanyama was just sincere in his expressions. He knew that Wemby could be better than he was now.
