Authorities have apprehended four Chilean nationals who are suspected of involvement in the December burglary of NFL star Joe Burrow's Ohio mansion.
The suspects include Alexander Chavez, Bastian Morales, Jordan Sanchez, and Sergio Cabello. They were apprehended on January 10 in Ohio following a traffic stop. Here is everything we know about the case so far.
Joe Burrow Ohio Mansion Break-in
According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, the suspects were found in possession of items that tied them to the crime scene. Authorities reported discovering:
- An LSU shirt and Bengals ballcap are believed to have been taken from Burrow's home.
- Husky automatic center punch tools are commonly used by organized theft groups to break glass and gain entry into homes.
- A phone with historical cell site data was placed near Burrow's residence on the night of the burglary.
The four men were described as being "illegally in the country or having overstayed their permissions."
Charges Filed Against the Suspects
While none of the suspects currently face direct burglary charges, they have been hit with four felony counts, including:
- Possessing criminal tools
- Participation in a criminal gang
These charges reflect the severity of their alleged involvement in the burglary and their suspected ties to organized theft operations.
What Happened Last Month
The break-in occurred on December 9, 2023, at Burrow's Ohio residence. The theft reportedly left the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback feeling "violated," as he described during a press conference on December 11.
Olivia Ponton, a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, is reported to have been the one who alerted authorities about the incident. However, she has not made any public statements about the crime.
South American Theft Group Ties
Authorities believe the suspects are connected to the South American Theft Group, an organization known for targeting high-value properties using sophisticated tools and techniques. The group's modus operandi often involves using center punch tools to break windows and gain entry quickly.
What's Next in the Case?
The individuals involved are expected to appear in court for a hearing on the case. Investigators would present additional evidence confirming the involvement of the quartet in the burglary. The case is still very vague as to whether additional charges are to be filed or not.
Joe Burrow's Response
While Burrow has not addressed the case in detail since December, his initial reaction underscored the personal impact of the crime. "It's a terrible feeling to be violated like that," he told reporters shortly after the incident.
Aside from Burrow, fellow NFL players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce also experienced getting burglarized. The former improved his security after the incident.
