Swimmer Riley Gaines joined voices rallying against the Olympics on Thursday as a gender firestorm erupted in response to a boxing match between Italy's Angela Carini and Algeria's Imane Khelif.

Carini threw in the towel just 46 seconds into the fight against Khelif, because she had "never taken a punch like that" or "been hit so hard in [her] life."

Despite there being no proof or indication that Khelif is a trans boxer, heated debates have ensued on social media over their elegibility to compete in the Olympics. The division comes from the International Olympics Committee (IOC) letting the 25-year-old fight, even though Khelif previously failed a gender eligibility test and was excluded from the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships.

The inclusion of Khelif has enraged other professional athletes and major celebrities like J.K. Rowling. Naturally, Gaines was also quick to share her thoughts, considering she had even predicted that a female boxer could get seriously hurt or even die at the Olympics for fighting "male boxers."

In an X post, she said, "Imane Khelif is 1 of 2 male boxers fighting women at the Olympics. A woman is going to die."

After the fight on Thursday, Gaines quickly elevated the hashtag #IStandWithAngelaCarini, tweeting that "men don't belong in women's sports." The post amassed more than 72 million views in just one hour.

In one of her many tweets she also claimed that the IOC and the democratic party cared more about "A male getting his feelings hurt" over "a woman getting physically hurt."

Since Gaines tweeted, the hashtag #IStandWithAngelaCarini has been used thousands of times and made it to the top of X trends.
