The San Antonio Spurs have landed a marquee free agent signing in, Chris Paul.

For several reasons, the future Hall of Fame point guard was enticed to join the Texas city for his 20th NBA season.

"I spoke to Chris Paul. He's very eager and motivated for this opportunity to return to a starting role. He still believes he's a starter, he still believes he could play at an elite level," league insider Chris B. Haynes told NBA TV.

Another primary reason the 39-year-old is joining San Antonio is his excitement about the chance to partner with reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and elevate the young 7-foot-4 center's game.

Haynes also mentioned that Paul and Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had a great conversation, with the five-time NBA championship coach selling him on the team's culture.

Chris Paul set to take a massive pay cut

Paul is set to take a massive pay cut for the 2024-25 season, with his contract in San Antonio being a one-year deal worth $11 million.

The four-time All-NBA First Team member made $30.8 million with the Golden State Warriors last season.

Paul last earned a salary near the $11 million range when he made $13.5 million in the 2009-10 NBA season with the New Orleans Hornets.
