Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick is under scrutiny just a day after officially assuming his newest high-profile position.

The 40-year-old is facing accusations of using a racial slur, specifically the N-word, allegedly directed at a woman named Halleemah Nash during his college basketball career with the Duke Blue Devils.

Nash, a Compton native and, ironically, a Lakers fan, shared her story on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

"I've only been called the N word to my face by a white man once in my life and it was on the campus of Duke University while I was doing work with the basketball team. And today he was named the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. What a world," she posted on Tuesday, June 25.

Redick played at Duke University for four years, from 2002 to 2006, and remains the men's basketball team's all-time leading scorer with 2,769 points.

The shooting guard also holds the record for the most points scored in a single season for Duke, with 964 points during his senior year in 2005-06.

JJ Redick denies racial slur allegations

Meanwhile, the former sharpshooter, who had a 15-year career in the NBA across six teams from 2006 to 2021, has vehemently denied the accusations against him.

"No, it never happened," a spokesperson for Redick told TMZ Sports.

Redick was officially named as the 29th head coach in Lakers franchise history during a press conference on Monday, June 24, which also happened to be his 40th birthday.
