The Golden State Warriors are confronting the possibility of losing Klay Thompson, one of the best players in franchise history.
The 34-year-old and the team have been discussing a contract extension for the past year, but they have not yet reached an agreement on terms, including length and value.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed the team's position on the sharpshooter during an appearance on the Jim Rome Show.
"Klay has been such an integral part of everything around here. Obviously, multi-time champion... Someone who has such a great connection with the Bay Area, with the franchise, with his teammates. We want Klay back desperately. I want him back desperately," the 58-year-old tactician said.
The Warriors offered Thompson a two-year deal worth $48 million before the 2023-24 season started. However, considering his decline in production during the campaign, he will likely command less.
Warriors have not talked to Klay Thompson that much
Thompson and the Warriors became eligible to negotiate with each other when the 2024 NBA Finals ended on June 17, before the five-time NBA All-Star could enter free agency on July 1.
However, according to ESPN, there hasn't been much communication between the two sides.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. also acknowledged that Thompson's free agency saga involves an emotional challenge, given what he means to the franchise.
