The Orlando Magic have been frequently mentioned as a possible destination for incoming free agent Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, but they are hesitant to fulfill one of his requests.
The 34-year-old has indicated that securing a three-year contract in free agency is necessary for his long-term future.
Orlando seems inclined to offer only a short-term deal, similar to the two-year, above-market contract worth $22 million the team gave Joe Ingles last year, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
The Magic aims to pursue a veteran guard or wing who can space the floor around their young stars, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, without needing many touches.
With an average annual salary of $11 million, the Magic's potential offer would represent a massive drop from Thompson's earnings of $43.2 million during the 2023-24 season.
The five-time NBA All-Star also declined a two-year extension with the Warriors before the 2023-24 season started, which was worth $48 million.
Warriors make initial offer to Klay Thompson
Despite the speculation about free agency, the Warriors have not abandoned their efforts to retain one of their greatest players ever.
The Bay Area squad has made a preliminary offer of a two-year contract, although the exact amount remains undisclosed, according to ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers may also consider Thompson only if they fail to add another star to their roster.
Thompson's current expiring deal is a five-year max contract worth $190 million, signed in 2019.
