The first major trade of the 2024 NBA offseason has gone down, with the Oklahoma City Thunder acquiring Chicago Bulls point guard Alex Caruso in exchange for young wing Josh Giddey.
Caruso is widely regarded as one of the best role players in the league. He is praised for his hustle, defensive prowess, and other intangibles.
The Thunder's acquisition of Caruso aims to replicate the impact of the Golden State Warriors signing of Andre Iguodala as a free agent in 2013. This signing was instrumental in unlocking the team's potential and guiding them to four NBA championships in the past decade.
Caruso, who is currently 30 years old, is the same age as Iguodala when he joined the Bay Area squad.
Iguodala went on to win the NBA Finals MVP during the Warriors' first title in their modern dynasty run in 2015.
Bulls add potential All-Star talent in Josh Giddey
Meanwhile, the Bulls acquired the 21-year-old Australian with significant potential to become an All-Star.
The Thunder selected Giddey with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Despite his impressive playmaking abilities, his role diminished this season due to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's emergence as a Thunder superstar.
The Bulls hope Giddey can fill the void left by Lonzo Ball, who has missed the past two years due to a persistent knee injury.
