Star running back Christian McCaffrey is signing an extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making him the highest-paid running back in the league, according to ESPN Adam Schefter.
The deal is for two years worth up to $38M. He will be receiving an additional $8M, keeping him in San Francisco through 2027.
He had initially signed a four-year $64M contract with the Carolina Panthers prior to the trade to San Fran. However, the new deal tacks on two more years to his existing contract.
McCaffrey, who joined the Niners in 2022, is coming off an extremely productive season, seeing him post 2,023 total yards (1459 rushing and 564 receiving) from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns.
It was now the second time he had a season with over 2,000 total yards, which was good enough to earn him the Offensive Player of the Year award last season, and be in potential MVP talks.

49ers Clear Super Bowl Goals
Re-signing Christian McCaffrey ahead of the 2024 season shows that the 49ers are fully committed to returning to the Super Bowl after failing to get the job done in the big dance last season against the Kansas City Chiefs.
McCaffrey's presence alone helps the Niners remain a top Super Bowl contending team, but the stout RB isn't the only key cog the 49ers need to re-sign this offseason.
Standout wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is still seeking a significant contract extension from San Francisco.
He clarified that he is seeking an extension ahead of the 2024 season and has reportedly skipped mini camp amidst contract talks.
Considering Justin Jefferson's new deal, along with DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, Jaylen Waddle, and Calvin Ridley's; Aiyuk would be looking for big money and the San Francisco 49ers should re-sign him if they hope to keep their Super Bowl hopes intact.
