The Sacramento Kings have presented their initial proposal to head coach Mike Brown, who has only one guaranteed year remaining on his contract.
Brown has been offered a three-year contract extension valued at $21 million, potentially reaching $27 million with bonuses, extending through the 2026-27 season.
However, despite the generous offer, the 54-year-old coach has not yet signed it, citing a significant reason, as league insider Shams Charania of The Athletic reported.
The Kings' offer would only provide him with a $7 million annual salary, which could be increased to $9 million with bonuses.
With head coaches' salaries rising across the league, Brown has previously expressed that he aims for approximately $10 million in annual compensation.
The Sacramento Kings failed to secure a spot in the 2024 NBA Playoffs after losing their second game to the New Orleans Pelicans in the play-in tournament.
This outcome was disappointing, especially considering their impressive performance during the 2022-23 season, where they secured the third seed in the West and made their first postseason appearance in 16 years.
Mike Brown's salary is peanuts compared to elite coaches
Brown assumed the role of head coach for the Kings in the 2022-23 season, entering into a three-year contract with a mutual option for a fourth year.
However, the option for the fourth year in 2025-26 was not exercised.
Per his existing deal, the NBA Coach of the Year for the 2022-23 season is earning less than $5 million per season.
