The Atlanta Braves' season just suffered a significant setback.

Braves star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. went down with an injury in the first inning of their road game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, May 26, at PNC Park.

After an MRI, the team announced that Acuna has been diagnosed with a complete tear of the ACL in his left knee and will be out for the remainder of the 2024 MLB season.

The 26-year-old will undergo surgery on a date yet to be determined, but typically doctors will wait for the swelling to go down before performing reparative procedures.

Acuna's injury in the first inning was non-contact, and it was initially described by the team as left knee soreness.

Ronald Acuna Jr's ACL tear is a huge setback for the Braves

Acuna's injury leaves a massive hole for the Braves, who finished with the best record in the entire MLB last season with 104 wins.

The Venezuelan star was at the center of that campaign for Atlanta, becoming the first MLB player in history to accomplish a 40-70 season with 41 home runs and 73 stolen bases.

Acuna won the National League Most Valuable Player Award and the NL Hank Aaron Award for the best hitter in the league, and he was named an MLB All-Star and All-MLB First Team for his sensational campaign in 2023.
