A promising defensive end prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft tragically passed away just a week before his anticipated opportunity to pursue his professional football aspirations.
Amitral 'AJ' Simon, an edge rusher for the University of Albany Great Danes, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, as confirmed by the university.
"AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years," the school's football team posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Before joining the Great Danes ahead of the 2022 season, the 6-foot-1, 267-pound Simon attended Bloomsburg University from 2018 to 2021.
The exact cause of his death has not been officially disclosed. There have been unverified reports suggesting it may have been due to a heart attack.
Albany coach offers condolences for AJ Simon
Head coach Greg Gattuso of the Great Danes shared a brief message on social media, calling Simon a "friend."
"Two joyous year coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon. My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8," the 61-year-old wrote.
In his final collegiate season in 2023, Simon recorded 12.5 sacks, 74 pressures, and 21.5 tackles for loss.
