Three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas has a solid argument for selecting Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as this season's Most Valuable Player.
Unlike the other MVP candidates, the 42-year-old former combo guard highlighted that the Canadian sensation is leading a team filled with young players.
Gilbert Arenas' case for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as NBA MVP
"Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] is the MVP, and here's why. There is not a veteran on that team that has any experience of winning. This is him pushing his 22, 23, 24-year-old [teammates]. He has them in a position to be the number 1, 2, 3 seed," Arenas said on a recent episode of his Gils Arena podcast on Tuesday, April 2.
The 25-year-old has been averaging 30.3 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.5 rebounds on 53.9% shooting from the field in 71 games this season.
Meanwhile, the Thunder are currently the top seed in the Western Conference entering Tuesday, but they are locked in a tight battle with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves for the coveted spot.
Gilbert Arenas' case against Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic as NBA MVP
Despite equally dominant seasons from Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, Arenas pointed out that those teams are armed with veteran players to help ease the load.
The two European players are among the consensus MVP candidates alongside Gilgeous-Alexander.
Arenas also pointed out Gilgeous-Alexander's leadership qualities, highlighting how young players play like veterans because of him.
