Texas Rangers title defense will start with a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs without Max Scherzer.

That is something they are prepared for as the 39-year-old is still recovering from a back surgery meant to repair a herniated disc.

He might be back earlier than expected, though, as the latest Rangers injury update suggests he will recover faster than the early forecast.

The right-handed pitcher was initially advised to recover for two months from the start of the season, meaning he could only be back around June.

However, the latest news suggests a possible early return.

"Max Scherzer progressing well. Chris Young says he's guessing Scherzer won't be placed on the 60-day IL. Which suggests a possible return in May," ESPN's Buster Olney wrote on X.

This is good news for the Rangers, who already have key players on the 60-day IL. Most notable among them are Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle, both recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Scherzer was acquired by the Rangers mid-season and started in eight games for them. He posted a 3.20 ERA (140 ERA+) and a 3.53 strikeout-to-walk ratio in those games.

Other Rangers on the injury list

In addition to Scherzer, deGrom, and Mahle, the Rangers also have injuries to first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and right-hand pitcher Carson Coleman.

Lowe is out with a right oblique strain and is potentially out for the opening day. Manager Bruce Bochy said Lowe might only return in mid-to-late April.

Coleman is from the minor league and has been out since 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He could be back for the team this July.
