D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves went off for the Los Angeles Lakers in double overtime win against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, and this is where Patrick Beverley was badly missed.
The defensive guard was listed as out for the game due to wrist pain, which he first felt during the shootaround for last Sunday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The rest he had only confirmed the worst as the Bucks now face the possibility of not having him on the bench in the playoffs.
Beverley confirmed that he could be out for the rest of the season.
The Bucks are yet to release a statement regarding this ugly development.
Patrick Beverley's injury extent
The former All-Defensive team member broke the news in his podcast.
He said the injury was confirmed after undergoing an X-ray following the Thunder game.
"I got some disturbing news that I don't really like. Talk to the doctor and he informed me that I tore a ligament on my right wrist and I'm gonna need it surgically repaired which takes 3-4 months."
While he is upset about the injury, he remains mentally ready.
"Solid, strong, sturdy," he said when asked by a co-host about his mental state. "It is supposed to happen right before playoffs. That makes the story even better."
After joining the team in February, Beverley is only averaging 5.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game this season. His defensive tenacity and leadership have been crucial for the team, which went 13-6 with him in the lineup.
The Bucks continue to label him as questionable for Thursday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Patrick Beverley injury history
The 35-year-old veteran has suffered numerous injuries throughout his career, including injuries to his hip, ankle, adductor, groin, and calf.
The one that kept him out the longest was his wrist injury in March 2015, which shut him out for the rest of the season. He suffered the same injury in 2019 as part of the Los Angeles Clippers under Doc Rivers.
Beverley referenced this injury in his podcast, saying his right wrist injury was not as painful as his left wrist injury nine years ago.
Bench situation in the Bucks
PatBev does not sound like he will sit out the season right now. He indicated at the start of his podcast that he needs to win a championship now.
He is still contemplating whether to undergo surgery or delay it to help the Bucks win their second championship this decade.
He will sit out the next few games, and in his place are long-time Bucks Pat Connaughton, streak shooter AJ Green, and rookie Andre Jackson.
Doc Rivers is not a big fan of playing young players, so Connaughton and Malik Beasley will take turns in the #2 spot.
Green might be able to play from time to time.
The team is second in the Eastern Conference, two games above no. 3 Cleveland Cavaliers.
