Veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks is moving to a different team than initially anticipated.

Despite agreeing to terms with the San Francisco 49ers early Wednesday, March 13, the 32-year-old had an eventual "change of heart" and is now signing with their rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, according to league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN.

During the 2023 season, Kendricks played for the Los Angeles Chargers, recording 79 solo tackles, 38 assists, and 3.5 sacks across 15 regular season games.

Kendricks was released earlier this month due to salary cap constraints. This move came after he signed a two-year, $13.25 million contract with the team ahead of the 2023 season.

Before his time with the Chargers, the former UCLA player had spent his entire NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings from 2018 to 2022.

In a standout 2019 season, Kendricks earned recognition as a First-Team All-Pro member and was selected to the Pro Bowl game.

Cowboys move reunites Kendrick with former head coach

The move brings Kendricks back together with Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who previously served as the head coach of the Vikings for eight seasons, from 2014 to 2021.

Zimmer reportedly wanted Kendricks to help run his defense, and the player himself expressed a preference for joining Dallas over San Francisco.

Kendricks is the Cowboys' initial free agent acquisition of the offseason.
