The San Diego Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox, according to league insider Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Details of the trade were initially unavailable, but league insider Jon Morosi of the MLB Network later reported that the Padres would be sending right-handed minor league pitchers Drew Thorpe and Jairo Iriarte back to the White Sox to complete the deal.

Thorpe is ranked as the No. 5 prospect in San Diego's farm system, while Iriarte holds the No. 8 spot.

Cease is coming off a 2023 season where he posted a record of 7-9 with a 4.58 ERA, a 1.418 WHIP, and a 2.4 WAR. This was his least efficient campaign since his rookie year in 2019.

The 28-year-old right-hander achieved significant accolades in 2022, being named the AL Cy Young runner-up and earning a spot on the All-MLB Second Team.

The Goergia native is under team control for the current and next seasons, and his salary for 2024 is $8 million.

The Chicago White Sox are rebuilding their team

Cease was involved in trade rumors throughout the offseason, particularly as new White Sox general manager Chris Getz aimed to reset a team that had endured a challenging season, losing 101 games.

However, the White Sox had previously indicated their willingness to retain Cease until the upcoming summer's trade deadline on July 30.
