The Washington Commanders are headed for an eventful offseason, and things have started picking up.
The team recently parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera on the NFL's annual Black Monday, which falls on January 8 this year. This Monday traditionally follows the end of the regular season and sees several head coaches being let go from their positions.
Rivera served as the team's head coach for four seasons, starting in 2020. While the initial year saw the team clinch the top spot in the NFC East, the subsequent seasons were marked by mediocrity, failing to finish with a winning record in all of Rivera's seasons.
The 2023 season concluded for the Commanders with a challenging 4-13 record, ranking as the worst in the entire NFC East.
Despite the poor season, there is a potential silver lining for the Commanders. They have secured the second overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 25 to 27.
This positions the team to land a standout talent, paving the way for a brighter, more competitive future. The Commanders have enlisted the expertise of renowned figures from various sports backgrounds.
Under the leadership of new owner Josh Harris, they've brought on board former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and ex-Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman.
These additions bolster an already distinguished advisory committee tasked with guiding decisions on the new head coach selection and determining who to select with the second overall pick. The committee also features Commanders' co-owners Magic Johnson, David Blitzer, and Mitch Rales.

Who Should Washington Commanders Take With the No. 2 Pick in the 2024 NFL Draft?
The upcoming draft features a plethora of elite prospects, including standout quarterbacks Caleb Williams from the USC Trojans, Drake Maye from the North Carolina Tar Heels, and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Predictions suggest that both Williams and Maye are poised to be among the first two selections in the draft, and the Commanders are expected to select whichever of the two talented quarterbacks is available when their turn comes.
Caleb Williams
Williams has amassed an impressive array of accolades before stepping foot in the NFL. Notably, in the 2022 season alone, he clinched prestigious honors such as the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year title.
During his collegiate career spanning Oklahoma and USC, the 22-year-old accumulated 10,082 passing yards, threw 93 touchdown passes, and was intercepted only 14 times.
Additionally, he demonstrated versatility in his gameplay, rushing for 960 yards and securing 27 touchdowns on the ground.
Drake Maye
Maye played for three seasons in North Carolina, starting in 26 games over his last two seasons.
The 21-year-old threw for 8,018 yards, which ranks fifth in the program's all-time passing yards list, and 63 touchdowns, fourth in the school's all-time list. He registered a 17-9 record as a starter.
The North Carolina native was able to bag several honors in the ACC during the 2022 season, including Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year.
