The San Francisco 49ers have dropped three games in a row, and Brock Purdy's struggles have been noticeable. Regardless, it appears Niners' management is keeping the faith in the 23-year-old play-caller.
This was what Niners general manager John Lynch said when he spoke to KNBR via David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. He said there is no crisis as far as the confidence in Purdy despite the play the former Iowa State Cyclone has been showing as of late.
"There's no crisis of confidence in Brock," Lynch explained. "I do talk to him a lot. I talk to all our players a lot. Brock is who he is, and that's what makes him special. He's got a lot of belief in himself. He's an accountable guy. He takes a lot of accountability."
This stems from the five interceptions that Purdy had in the three losses the Niners got. Lynch shared that the 23-year-old is aware of these and is taking accountability, NBC Sports Bay Area reported.
But if Purdy continues his downward trend, the Niners may have to make a move. Here are some potential alternatives San Francisco could undertake.
Freeze Purdy for Darnold
Sam Darnold's name cropped up with Purdy's status uncertain before San Francisco's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. That all went up in smoke when Purdy ended up playing despite not being at 100%, The Athletic reported.
Seen as a perfect fit to the system of Niners coach Kyle Shanahan, unnamed NFL executives believe that the 26-year-old could deliver if allowed to do so, ESPN reported. The only question now is when that chance will crop up.
Stick with Purdy but with big stakes
From the looks of it, the Niners may live or die with Purdy - regardless of whether he is 100% healthy. The former Cyclone is putting up impressive performances despite playing hurt.
However, this may be a risky gamble for both sides. If the injury is not fully healed, the play-caller could aggravate the injury and be shelved permanently. The errors could be a sign pointing to that, so it is a decision that the Niners will have to seriously think about.
Keep the fort up until 2024
Purdy's future with the Niners is uncertain. His struggles are not making it any easier for San Francisco.
There is no telling what the 49ers will do once the season ends. However, there is a name that they may target in 2024 - Michael Penix Jr. of the Washington Huskies, Tom Jensen of Sports Illustrated suggested.
However, this depends on whether Penix is still available once it is the Niners' turn to pick. The scribe, however, cautioned that the 23-year-old also has an injury history that needs to be looked into.
"[Kyle] Shanahan can draft Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. if he falls, the most accurate college deep thrower in years, but with an injury history," Jensen stated.
Heading into their next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the result could be telling what the 49ers may decide on their quarterback dilemma.
San Francisco is a three-point road favorite, per Oddschecker. A win could fan out the flames of Brock Purdy's struggles - at least for now.
