Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek made easy work of American Jessica Pegula in the championship match of the WTA Finals tournament, 6-1, 6-0, on Monday, November 6, at the Estadio Paradisus in Cancun, Mexico.

The 22-year-old was firing on all cylinders during the evening, dominating the match that lasted only 59 minutes. Swiatek extended her winning streak to 11 games, bringing her 2023 record to 68-11.

Throughout the year, she has secured six trophies, notably including her fourth career Grand Slam title at the French Open last June. This marks her first time winning the WTA Finals.

"I want to thank my team who have been with me for the whole season. We've had many ups and downs, but this is for sure an up, and we'll have many more if we keep working like that," the four-time Grand Slam winner said.

The year-end event is run by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), the sport's principal organizing body. It is widely considered the next most prestigious tournament after the four majors.

Swiatek back on top

With her victory in the tournament, Swiatek will end the year as the number one player in the world, snatching the crown from Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, whom she defeated in the competition's semifinals.

"She clearly really wanted that ranking. I mean, you could tell by the way she was competing here. ... She was, like today, crushing people," Pegula said.

Swiatek was previously the world No.1 since April 2022 before Sabalenka gained the upper hand last September.
