Tottenham Hotspur was in the running as the next Invincibles of the Premier League, but that dream was run over after succumbing to a loss to Chelsea in a game marred by multiple ejections and physical plays.

The Spurs' defense is credited for their undefeated 10-game streak, but it collapsed when Christian Romero was sent off in the 33rd minute.

Argentinian Romero is a heralded defender both in the Premier League and his national team.

He got even more hyped before the Chelsea game after the praise from Lionel Messi.

"For me, he is the best defender in the world right now," said Messi a few days ago after their World Cup Qualifiers win over Ecuador.

"Amazing performance tonight, man of the match."

Not the best defender against Chelsea

The hosts struck early, but the Blues countered with two goals of their own.

Things got more physical, and Romero received a straight red card in the 33rd minute.

The Spurs never recovered from there, and things got even worse for them as Destiny Udogie got his second yellow card for roughing.

Romero, for his part, was just not in the game since the kickoff. He was caught for roughing early in the game and then called for a foul for kicking out Levi Colwill.

Romero's early departure laid to waste Tottenham's strong start in the league, handing

manager Ange Postecoglou and the Spurs their first defeat of the season. They now fall to second place in the table.

Next on their schedule are the Wolverhampton Wanderers.
