Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has appealed to the ELN (National Liberation Army), the Colombian insurgent group accountable for the abduction of his father, urging them to ensure his safe and unharmed release.
"I beg that they free him immediately, respecting his integrity and ending this painful wait. In the name of love and compassion we ask they reconsider their actions and allow us to have him back," Diaz pleaded.
The insurgent group abducted both of the 26-year-old's parents on October 29 in their hometown of Barrancas, Colombia.
While his mother was rescued a day later, his father is still being held captive. Colombia's President Gustavo Petro has mobilized all public forces to assist in the search efforts.
"Every second, every minute our anxiety grows. My mother, my brothers and I are desperate, anxious and have no words to describe what we are feeling. This suffering will only end when we have him home with us," Diaz said after Liverpool's Premier League match against Luton Town on Sunday, November 5.
The winger has missed the last two matches due to the situation, but he was included on the substitute bench for the game at Kenilworth Road.
Luis Diaz salvages a point for Liverpool
Diaz made his comeback in the 81st minute of the game with Liverpool trailing 1-0. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, he netted an equalizing goal, rescuing a draw.
As he scored the crucial goal, Diaz lifted his shirt to reveal the words "LIBERTAD PARA PAPA," Spanish for "freedom for dad."
