The family Adam Johnson and his fiancée dreamed of is all that now - a dream - after the Nottingham Panthers player tragically died in the middle of a hockey game in England's Elite Ice Hockey League.
The former Pittsburgh Penguins winger died of neck wounds after getting struck by a skate blade during the second quarter of their game against the Sheffield Steelers.
Johnson's partner, Ryan Wolfe, spoke out publicly for the first time and paid tribute to her fiancée.
"My sweet, sweet angel. I'll miss you forever and love you always," she wrote on Instagram.
It was earlier reported that Wolfe was in the crowd during the game and rushed to her partner when the accident occurred.
Investigation now underway
The police are now investigating the tragedy in England's top hockey league. This, however, is just a standard procedure in cases like this.
The authorities also called to stop speculating on the details of the accident.
"Our officers remain at the scene carrying out inquiries," South Yorkshire Police said.
"Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.
"We would encourage the public to avoid speculation regarding the incident while we continue our inquiries."
Meanwhile, the EIHL has announced that it is implementing the mandatory wearing of neck guards in its games. Johnson was not wearing one during the accident.
"It is unacceptable for any player to lose their life while playing sport," said the EIHA.
"Our responsibility is not only to avert the recurrence of such a heart-breaking accident, but also to pre-emptively address other foreseeable incidents in the future."
