The Indianapolis Colts and Anthony Richardson explored an unusual source for help regarding the quarterback's AC joint injury on his throwing shoulder.
The fourth overall pick of this year's NFL Draft has failed to finish three of his first five starts in the NFL due to various injuries, and the team subsequently announced that he will undergo a season-ending surgery.
According to ESPN reporter Stephen Holder, the Colts sought advice from some of the top medical professionals in Major League Baseball (MLB), including experts from the Texas Rangers and New York Mets.
2) Richardson's in great hands. The Colts consulted w some of top docs in MLB (Rangers + Mets) on this. Why baseball? Because Richardson is a thrower and should be treated as such. That’s why the usual treatment on AC joints don’t necessarily apply here. Throwers are different.

They turned to baseball because of Richardson's role as a thrower, requiring specialized treatment that differs from the typical approach to AC joint injuries.
The MLB doctors worked closely with the Colts' medical team and the 21-year-old by maintaining daily communication and follow-ups.

Richardson's injury will not likely happen again
Holder added that there are no worries about long-term complications about the surgery, which will insert stabilizers on Ricardson's shoulder to reinforce the joint, a method that is generally highly successful.
This procedure is expected to resolve the current problem and reduce the likelihood of future occurrences.
Initially, there was unanimous agreement that surgery was the best course of action. However, they chose to delay the procedure for a thorough evaluation process.
The timeline for his recovery will be determined after the surgery, but Colts head coach Shane Steichen said that Richardson could be good to go by spring training.
