Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors is entering the final year of his deal with the NBA club, and most are left guessing if he will remain in the Bay Area.
The good news is that the Warriors and Thompson appear aligned in keeping their relationship. The only problem is that it may cost the Golden State and add to their luxury tax woes.
For now, the projection is that Thompson will likely get a four-year deal worth $30 to 35 million, Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reported.
"There is no sign of acrimony between Thompson and the Warriors," Mannix wrote. "Bet on the two sides getting something done."
Klay Thompson's true feelings with Dubs
The five-time NBA All-Star cannot envision playing for any other team. He weighed in on this when he spoke with Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
In the final year of his contract with the Warriors, Klay Thompson is set to make $43.2 million. Hence, if that projected $30 to $35 million does come to fruition, the four-time NBA champion would have to agree to a pay cut.
Some argue that that would be a fairly reasonable amount at his age. However, Thompson needs to evaluate it carefully.
Assuming he does agree to a four-year deal in that price range, he may not get the chance at another big money long-term deal. He would be 38 years old by the time that new deal ends.
But then again, the years could be whittled down on his end. That comes with risks, especially considering the injuries that Thompson has been through. And it appears he is fully aware of that, CBS Sports pointed out.
"I'm not going to sell myself short. I know how incredible that is," Thompson said. "To do that after an ACL and an Achilles, that's hard work."
