J.K. Dobbins of the Baltimore Ravens was looking forward to playing his last NFL season on a rookie deal. Unfortunately, it was not the way he wanted to end it.
The 24-year-old running back saw an abrupt end to his 2023-24 NFL season after suffering a season-ending torn Achilles tendon injury in the Ravens win over the Houston Texans on Sunday, September 10, ESPN reported.
The injury happened five minutes after halftime. Dobbins got a short pass in the right flat but was taken down by Texans safety M. J. Stewart. The former second-round pick limped his way to the sidelines before trainers escorted him to the locker room.
According to Ravens coach Jim Harbaugh, Dobbins suffered a torn Achilles tendon that ended his NFL season abruptly, the Bellingham Herald reported.
"I just feel bad for him," Harbaugh said. "This is not the way we expected this to go."
After the mishap, Justice Hall took Dobbins' place and ran for two touchdowns.
Dobbins joins list of injured Ravens' players
It was an unfortunate development for Dobbins, who has had his share of injuries since entering the league in 2020, including an ACL, LCL, and meniscus in his left knee.
He joins a long list of injured Ravens players who exited the season opener with injuries. Other names include Marcus Williams (left shoulder), left tackle Ronnie Stanley (knee), and center Tyler Linderbaum (ankle).
"I feel like J.K. been busting his behind to get back on that field and just show ... what he's capable of and to help us out along the way. I spoke highly of him this offseason, just letting everybody know we really need him. For him to go down with a [season-ending] injury, that's just very unfortunate, not just him -- for all of us," Ravens QB Lamar Jackson quipped.
The injury also raises questions about getting a contract extension. Dobbins expressed displeasure about not getting one when he spoke to WJZ-TV, and this latest injury may complicate things.
J.K. Dobbins was set to earn $1.39 million in base salary for the 2023 NFL season.
