Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans reportedly suffered a left meniscus injury on Tuesday, September 5. However, it has yet to be determined if he will required to undergo surgery.

According to the latest Trey Murphy injury update, the mishap happened when the 23-year-old was working out at the Pelicans practice facility.

The 17th overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft will be tested to determine if he will have to go under the knife, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported, citing sources.

Should Trey Murphy need surgery, the former Virginia Cavaliers player will miss the first few months of the 2023-24 NBA season.

However, Murphy may have a non-surgical alternative. Under this scenario, the promising young swingman who has shown All-Star potential would miss roughly six to eight weeks next season.

Unfortunate Trey Murphy development

It was an unfortunate injury to Trey Murphy III, who enjoyed a breakout year with the Pelicans. He was initially selected by the Memphis Grizzlies but was shipped to the Pels following a three-team trade that involved Jonas Valanciunas and Devonte Graham on Aug. 7, 2021, NBA.com reported.

One of the highlights of his 2022-23 season was reaching the finals of the NBA Slam Dunk contest. He lost to Mac McLung in the final.

As far as his performance last NBA season, Murphy III had a good year after averaging 14.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 79 games. It was his shooting touch that drew attention, shooing 48.4% from the field and 40.6% from beyond the arc, CBS Sports reported.
