FIBA World Cup: Giannis Antetokounmpo's Brother Follows Bucks Star in Shocking Withdrawal

Kostas Antetokounmpo, a member of the Greece national basketball team, will miss the upcoming 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be held from August 25 to September 10, primarily in the Philippines, with some games in Indonesia and Japan, as per Eurohoops.net.

The 25-year-old has suffered an undisclosed injury, according to the Hellenic Basketball Federation.

The 6-foot-10 power forward-center previously wore the Greece jersey in the 2022 EuroBasket and the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria, Canada, in 2021.

Experienced guards Nick Calathes and Kostas Sloukas will also miss the international tournament for Greece and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Kostas is currently playing for the Panathinaikos B.C. of the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague. He previously won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers during the bubble in 2020.

One Antetokounmpo brother remains

One member of the Antetokoumpo family will continue to represent Greece in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo remains committed to the Greek national team, with the tournament starting in less than two weeks.

2021 NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo previously backed out from competing in the World Cup to recover from a clean-up procedure on his left knee.

"This was not a choice but my only option in ensuring I get back to the level of basketball I have worked so hard to achieve so far in my career," the seven-time NBA All-Star said.
