San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted he did not feel comfortable following a near miss during the team's first day of padded practice last Monday.

During an 11-to-11 drill, defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell swatted the ball out of quarterback Brock Purdy's hand as he prepared to unleash a throw. Ferrell nearly hit Purdy's surgically repaired throwing arm, causing the 43-year-old tactician to feel uneasy.

"I had hold my breath so I didn't lose my mind. I could see he was alright, but, it's human nature. The only way you can finish a sack is if you run, run and reach. And those guys do it and that's why we have to get on them all the time not to do it, because it's human nature," Shanahan said.

The coach added that it is a lot more sensitive when you see it happen to Purdy, who ended his season last year with a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament on his throwing elbow.

The 23-year-old picked up the injury during the NFC Championship Game, wherein they lost 7-31 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brock Purdy downplays incident

The talented quarterback rubbed off the incident, saying it was just football.

Purdy understands that his teammates and coaches might be a little worried about what happened in practice, given how he ended last season.

However, last year's final draft pick assured he was not scared about it and remained composed and not timid after it happened.
