Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon made a financial sacrifice for the team to boost their chances of claiming the first-ever Super Bowl of the franchise.
In the middle of last July, Mixon and the Bengals agreed to restructure his four-year extension worth $48 million, signed in 2020.
The former Oklahoma Sooners player said he was looking at the "big picture" when discussing the reworked deal.
"I see the task at hand and what we're trying to build and in order to keep other players here and pieces here, sometimes you have to sacrifice. I felt like this year was the year to sacrifice on the Super Bowl team we can potentially be," the 2021 Pro Bowl selection said in an interview posted on the team's website.
Joe Mixon's reworked deal gives team flexibility
Mixon was supposed to have a $9.4 million non-guaranteed base salary for the 2023 season, but that figure has now been reduced to a new cash value of $5.8 million. His $3 million pay cut would give the team extra space to acquire additional boosts for the roster.
The contract restructure accounted for $4.3 million in savings against the cap this year for the Bengals.
Mixon's agent Peter Schaffer said that the 27-year-old's goal is to win a Super Bowl and play his career in Cincinnati, and the reworked deal is the best way to accomplish these goals.
