Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has reported a back injury in training camp that could escalate the tension between him and the team.

The 24-year-old sustained an undisclosed back injury while working out on his own in Arizona, according to longtime Colts reporter Mike Chappell. Taylor is also rehabbing from an ankle surgery performed last January after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 15 of the 2022 season.

The Colts are planning on placing him on the non-football injury list, which could result in Indianapolis withholding Taylor's salary for the regular season, per Stephen Holden of ESPN.

Taylor is entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract, wherein he is set to earn $4.3 million this season, the 18th-highest among running back salaries in 2023.

The current saga came when Taylor asked for a trade out of Indianapolis after the two parties disagreed on a contract extension. Colts owner Jim Irsay bluntly denied the trade request when asked about the matter.

"We will not trade Jonathan Taylor. That is a certainty. Not now or not in October," Irsay told ESPN.
