LSU Basketball: Ex-Women's Star Danielle Ballard Dead at 29 After Car Accident

Former LSU Tigers women's basketball star Danielle Ballard tragically lost her life at 29 in a car accident on Thursday morning in her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. 

According to the Memphis Police Department, officers responded to a pedestrian hit at Coleman Road and Raleigh-Lagrange Road at 1:30 A.M., just a few miles from the Memphis Grizzlies' home arena FedExForum.

She was rushed to Regional One Health but was pronounced dead shortly. The driver remained on the scene, and the accident is still under investigation.

Ballard, a native of Shelby County, played for the Tigers from 2012 to 2015. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists during her LSU career. 

The university released a statement regarding the passing of their former player.

Before joining LSU, Ballard was ranked as the No. 25 overall recruit as rated by ESPN HoopGurlz in the Class of 2012, and she led her team to a state championship while at Memphis Central High School.

In her freshman season, she broke LSU's all-time record for steals in a season with 100, playing 34 games and starting in 28.

Ballard was selected to the SEC all-defensive team selection in her freshman and junior seasons and an All-SEC First Team selection in the 2014-15 season.
