Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that two substantial upgrades will come to their W14 car before the summer break, hoping to reduce their gap to top teams, Red Bull and Aston Martin.
The first upgrade will be fitted out during the British Grand Prix on July 9, while the second upgrade will either come at the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 23 or the Belgian Grand Prix on July 30. The two races are the remaining ones before F1 goes into the summer break.
The Silverstone update could be bigger than what they brought in Monaco last May. Since that race, the two Mercedes cars finished on the podium during the Spanish Grand Prix behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
In the next race, Lewis Hamilton finished third in the recent Canadian Grand Prix, staying within touching distance of second-placer Fernando Alonso. George Russell was also in contention for a podium finish, but he retired from the race after hitting the wall.
Mercedes Correlation Issues Resolved
The Mercedes chief was happy with their performance in Canada, saying that the correlation issues that have plagued the team since 2022 have finally been solved.
"Now what the car does [on track] correlates with what we are measuring in the simulations, and it hasn't done that for a year and a half," Wolff mentioned after the race.
There was skepticism despite their 2-3 finish in Spain due to the possibility that the Barcelona circuit's characteristics may have concealed some of the weaknesses of their car. However, their strong performance in Canada erased those doubts.
