Italian club AS Roma ended short in clinching the title of the UEFA Europa League, the second-tier European club football competition, on Tuesday night.
AS Roma faced Spanish club Sevilla FC in the final, losing in penalties after being tied 1-1 after extra-time at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.
The match was Roma manager Jose Mourinho's first-ever loss in a major European final, having won the Champions League twice with Porto and Inter Milan and the Europa League with Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho Not Happy With Second-Place
The decorated manager, dubbed "The Special One," was unhappy with the result. He gave away his runners-up medal to a fan in the crowd shortly after receiving it from UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
The La Liga club has won the competition six times prior, all in the 21st century, and was looking to add one more to their trophy cabinet.
Ironically, Roma players scored all of the goals in the game, with Argentine Paulo Dybala striking first in the 35th minute to give the Italian club the lead. However, 10 minutes into the second half, Roma center-back Gianluca Mancini inadvertently scored an own goal, putting Sevilla on level.
The scoreline remained that way for the rest of the match, with the final going to penalties to settle the winner.
Roma missed two of their first three penalties, while Sevilla nailed all four of theirs to win their seventh UEFA Europa League trophy in club history, as per BBC.
