Things are going from bad to worse for the San Francisco 49ers as they entered their bye week with a record below .500 after a narrow loss to Arizona in Week 5. The 49ers will look to get their campaign back on track when they take on the Indianapolis Colts this coming Sunday. Read on below for an in-depth breakdown of this Colts vs 49ers matchup.
Indianapolis Colts enter Week 7 as +5 underdogs
On Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts returned to their winning ways with a convincing 31-3 victory over the reeling Houston Texans. It was a huge bounce-back win for the Colts, who suffered a gut-wrenching overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. With the victory, the Colts improved to 2-4 as they moved to within 1.5 games of Tennessee for the AFC South lead.
Carson Wentz starred for the Colts in the Week 6 win, completing 11 of 20 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. He got some help from the returning T.Y. Hilton, who caught four passes for 80 yards in his first game back since suffering a neck injury last season. In this contest, the Colts had a balanced attack, with Jonathan Taylor wreaking havoc on the ground, running for 145 yards and two scores on 14 carries.
For the Colts to make it back-to-back wins against the 49ers, they will need to continue their excellent play on the defensive end. Indianapolis' defense recorded a second-half shutout on Sunday as the Colts handed the Texans their second-worst loss of the season. They harassed rookie Davis Mills all afternoon long as he threw no touchdowns and a couple of interceptions.
San Francisco Giants installed as -5 favorites
San Francisco's bye week could not have come at a much opportune time after the 49ers absorbed their third consecutive defeat at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5. The 49ers are losing ground fast in the NFC West as they now trail division leaders Arizona by 3.5 games heading into Week 7.
To make matters worse for the 49ers, Trey Lance sprained his left knee in the Week 5 loss to the Cards after taking plenty of hits from the Arizona defense. He completed 15 of 29 passes for 192 yards with no touchdowns and an interception through the air and had 16 carries for 89 yards on the ground.
The good news for San Francisco is that Lance's injury is not long-term, with coach Kyle Shanahan saying that he will miss just one to two weeks. With the rookie quarterback possibly sidelined for the Week 7 clash, the 49ers may again give the starting nod to Jimmy Garoppolo.
He suffered a calf injury in Week 4 and was close to returning against Arizona. Shanahan has maintained that Garoppolo will return to his starting role once he has recovered from his calf problem. He had completed 78 of his 118 passes this season for 925 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions.
