Ryan Braun Trade Rumors [VIDEO]: New York Mets 'Checked In' On Embattled Brewers Slugger

As the New York Mets ponder ways to improve their team after five straight losing seasons and attempt to bolster their outfield, it was reported that there was an internal discussion about possibly acquiring embattled Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun. Now reports have surfaced that the Mets "checked in" briefly with the Brewers about a possible trade to bring the slugger to Queens.

CBS Sports reports that the Mets checked in on Braun during the general manager's meetings, but Mets GM Sandy Alderson denied it being anything too serious.

"If you could count a four-word sentence as checking [in]," Alderson said per CBS Sports when asked about whether or not New York was interested in Braun and asked Milwaukee about him. "[I asked] what's up with Braun?" Alderson told CBS Sports when asked to reveal what the extent of his conversations about Braun entailed.

The Mets are intent on landing a corner outfielder, and while they inked a one-year $7.25 million deal with Chris Young this offseason, landing a .200 hitter won't quite make a fan base that is starving for something to get happy about too excited. CBS Sports reports that while the Braun check in can be described as minimal at best, the Mets still have interest in landing Nelson Cruz or Curtis Granderson as they are actively pursuing a solid outfield bat.

The Mets had internal discussions about going after Braun, but the Brewers are likely to keep the outfielder, despite Braun serving a 65-game suspension for his connection to the Biogenesis clinic and performance enhancing drugs. New York was reportedly one of "four or five" teams to inquire about Braun, according to CBS Sports.

"We have no intention of trading Ryan," Brewers GM Doug Melvin told CBS Sports. "There is absolutely no truth to that. We've never contacted any team about Ryan."

Braun hit .298 with nine homers and 38 RBIs 61 games during an injury plagued season before he accepted and agreed to the suspension that ended his season.

The Brewers have expressed confidence that Braun will be fine returning from the suspension, and it doesn't look like Braun will be leaving Milwaukee while the Mets will look elsewhere to try to bolster their outfield and lineup.
