The Brooklyn Nets are the most expensive team in the NBA with a payroll of $190 million yet the squad is languishing in the cellar of the Atlantic Division with a 3-9 record and a four-game losing streak. Although injuries to key players like Deron Williams and Brooke Lopez can be blamed for the poor start, some fans are also pointing to rookie coach Jason Kidd for the team's woes.
Coach Kidd, however, said that his players are not following his instructions particularly on defense, rebounds and interior toughness.
"That's a very good question," NY Daily News quoted Kidd as saying when asked why he is not getting through to his players. "Because we've written on the board. We've talked about it. The coaches have talked about it. As players, at some point they have to accept it, and maybe our message isn't clear enough."
Kidd made the statements following another Nets loss, this time a 30-point whooping courtesy of Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves which also marked the first loss of Kevin Garnett at the hands of his old team.
Garnett, who was acquired in the offseason together with Paul Pierce from the Boston Celtics, could not hide his disappointment after the game. He was quoted as saying: " "Pretty much everything right now. We're trying to soul search right now and see who we are. Each individual has got to look themselves in the mirror and try and see what they can do better. Period. Point blank. We're better than this, and we know it. I don't know what it is ... a broken record? We keep playing the same old song and we're playing the instruments, so it's on us."
Kidd retired in the offseason and was immediately named Brooklyn coach. He has been getting a lot of flak for his coaching, with David Thorpe of ESPN calling him the worst coach in the league.
