A Pennsylvania high school football player who took his opponent's helmet off and bashed him over the head with it in a brawl during a game is being charged with assault, according to reports.
The incident occurred during the third quarter of a game between Annville-Cleona High School and Hamburg High in Hamburg, Pa. on Sept. 6. The ugly event unfolded with the Hamburg senior swinging his helmet violently at the Annville player and bashing him over the head with it. According to The New York Daily News, South Annville Township police said on Wednesday that the Hamburg senior is being charged as a juvenile with assault and disorderly conduct.
The assault during the game was caught on video and showed the Hamburg defender wearing No.15 rush an Annville-Cleona player who punched his teammate during an Annville running play. The Hamburg player then ripped off the player's helmet and swung it at him twice, with the second hit crashing with a thud on his head.
The Annville-Cleona player, who wore No.72, had a cut on his head but suffered no serious damage.
With both players ejected, Hamburg went on to win 25-22, but the resolution in the aftermath of the incident took almost three months to complete.
The New York Daily News reports that the decision by police came in one day after a criminal charge was announced in a similar case in Kansas City.
A 17-year-old Platte County High School football player was charged with assault on Tuesday for ripping off a player's helmet and banging him over the head with it during a game on Oct. 18.
According to The New York Daily News, Hamburg coach Joe Sinkovich resigned as head coach this month after nine seasons at the helm.
