It appears Showtime has thought twice about putting Adrien Broner on pay-per-view on December 14th against Marcos Maidana, and will instead televise his bout against "El Chino" on regular cable television.
That night's card is fairly stacked for a non pay-per-view event, including fights between Keith "One-Time" Thurman and Jesus Soto Karass, along with Victor Ortiz's return to the ring against Alfonso Gomez. The night promises nothing but action fights featuring pressure fighters.
Many boxing fans and analysts predict Maidana will be the most difficult fight of Broner's young career. Maidana is Broner's hardest punching opponent yet, and will test "The Problem's" chin as a welterweight.
Broner has been billed as the "next" Floyd Mayweather, but Maidana's not buying it and expects to have his hand raised. "He's not Mayweather. But we'll see how he comes out for this fight because I do think he'll prepare very good and he'll study me well so we'll have a good strategy," Maidana said.
Keith Thurman is another rapidly rising fighter known for his one-punch knockout potential, thus his nickname "One Time." In September Thurman predicted Soto Karass would be his next "victim."
"It looks like the next knockout victim will be Soto-Karass. I'll probably end up fighting Soto-Karass, then something big in 2014." Thurman wanted a fight with Robert Guerrero, who hasn't been seen since losing to Floyd Mayweather earlier this year.
"He was proposed the fight by Richard Schaefer, and he said 'No thanks.' I don't know what he's doing in his career right now. I just know that he didn't have a fight lined up. He's a great fighter and I was hoping to step into the ring with one of the big names out there. But obviously, he's just another one that doesn't want to fight Keith Thurman."
Finally, Ortiz will fight for the first time since Josesito Lopez broke his jaw and ruined a big fight with Canelo Alvarez. Ortiz is 29-4-2 with 22 knockouts, and is well-known for involving himself in slugfests. His undercard bout with Alfonso Gomez will likely prove to be no exception.
