Floyd Mayweather announced his retirement in September last year, but Gennady Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez the former pound-for-pound king is still planning to return in the near future.

In fact, Sanchez thinks that Mayweather is intrigued with the possibility of clashing with Golovkin. The veteran trainer told On The Ropes Boxing Radio that in recent interviews, Mayweather sounded like he is preparing for a comeback fight in the hope of improving his already-impressive record to 50-0.

When asked about Mayweather's possible comeback, Sanchez said that the unbeaten boxing superstar is thinking of facing Golovkin, the reigning World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization middleweight world champion.

"He is saying things about a comeback, he just seems to be fixated on Golovkin," Sanchez said. "I've seen three or four pieces in the last couple of weeks where he's talking about beating Golovkin, it looks like he's laying the ground work for something."

Sanchez added that Mayweather is likely gauging how the fans will accept the proposed bout with Golovkin, who holds an impressive 34-0 record with 31 knockout victories.

"I think you lay the ground work, you say things to see how people react," Sanchez said. "You say things to see if it's something that the public wants and he's gauging that. We've always known that Floyd was a great businessman, so it's all part of a plan for him. There's nothing that he says or does that is not calculated."

Mayweather announced his retirement after improving his record to 49-0 via a unanimous decision win over Andre Berto in September last year, which came just four months after scoring a masterful unanimous decision victory against rival Manny Pacquiao in their record-setting bout.

While Mayweather has already stated that he is not planning to return, previous rumors indicated that the Grand Rapids native will indeed return for one more fight in order to get his 50th win in as many fights. Previous reports mentioned that Mayweather could face Danny Garcia or give Pacquiao a rematch later this year.
