The Dallas Cowboys signed Greg Hardy in the summer of 2015 despite his troubled past. And they left the door open, if only a crack, that they also may sign quarterback Johnny Manziel at some point in the future.

It's a strange infatuation, indeed, that America's team (re: Jerry Jones) has with America's NFL social media butterfly, who cleared waivers Saturday and now is a free agent.

NFL Should Be Alarmed If 3 Teams Still Have Interest In Johnny Manziel

"A source said the club has no intention of bringing the former Heisman Trophy winner in for a visit or signing him now that he's been released by Cleveland," the Dallas Morning News reported. "That same source said the Cowboys won't pursue the quarterback and doesn't foresee the club having any serious discussions about him, 'until he gets his life back in order.'

For some reason, the Cowboys don't want to say "no" to the embattled ex-Cleveland Browns quarterback after saying "no" to him in the 2014 NFL Draft, despite owner Jerry Jones' wishes.

So it seems that Manziel will not get the Ray Rice treatment, despite the fact that both of them have been associated with domestic violence issues. Rice's sin is that his crime was caught on camera. Manziel still is awaiting a Dallas grand jury decision whether to charge Manziel with a misdemeanor assault/domestic violence charge.

In fact, the Cowboys declaration was perceived as positive news for Johnny Football, who has shown no intention of breaking from his partying ways.

"That could be the best news for Manziel, since it gives him a reason to do whatever he has to do to turn things around," Pro Football Talk reported. "While the reasons for his 10-week stint in rehab last year aren't known, it's safe to assume based on published reports and quotes from people like his father that alcohol was one of the problems, if not the only one. Over the past few months, it's become obvious that he has been drinking alcohol, publicly and brazenly and frequently."

So it appears all Manziel has to do is re-enter rehab and keep a low profile and he has a chance to show the Cowboys he's trying to get his life back in order.

But because the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner already used rehab to get the Cleveland Browns to buy into what has become a ruse that he changed his persona, Dallas better do its due diligence or offer an incentive-laden contract before inviting Manziel back in the fold.
