He's fallen asleep on the set; he's made a stench of the set with his bodily functions. And so ESPN is promoting him to "emeritus" status.

In other words, ESPN has taken Mike Ditka off its "Sunday NFL Countdown" show, replacing him with newly retired Matt Hasselbeck, according to The Big Lead.

"Matt Hasselbeck, the quarterback who spent the last three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, is expected to join ESPN this week, where he'll replace Mike Ditka on the network's marquee football show, 'Sunday NFL Countdown', three sources told The Big Lead.

"Ditka is not leaving ESPN -- he's just departing Countdown. Sources say he'll have an unspecified emeritus-type NFL role at the network."

Bears Castoff Matt Forte Could Be Key Addition For Cowboys

Maybe, ESPN wasn't sure that also recently retired Charles Woodson, who was hired in February to replace Keyshawn Johnson on "Sunday NFL Countdown," would be as quick to wake up the legendary coach of "Da Bears" 1985 Super Bowl team if he falls asleep on the set as he did in December, 2013, as Deadspin.com reported.

Ditka also reported made a loud fart on "Monday Night Countdown" in 2015, according to The Fumble.

In addition to Ditka's removal, ESPN may be planning on removing longtime broadcasters Chris Berman and Tom Jackson after 2016, Pro Football Talk reported.

No indication has been made of what Ditka might do next for ESPN. He entered the NFL Hall of Fame tight end after a 12-year career with the Bears, Eagles and Cowboys.

He had a 121-95 record in 14 years as a coach with the Bears and Saints. He also won six division titles in Chicago.
