Despite Jerry Jones' pie-in-the-sky claims that Tony Romo will play three or four more years, the Cowboys are in a win-now mode.

That could be the best news free-agent running back Lamar Miller could hear.

Greg Hardy Ordeal Could Prevent Cowboys From Signing Top Pass Rusher In NFL Draft

The 24-year-old Miller will not re-sign with the Dolphins, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Two teams appear to be the front-runners for his services, the report adds.

Colts General Manager Takes Cheap Shot At Cowboys For Inability To Protect Tony Romo

"The Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys appear to be the front-runners for Miller, who contributed 1,269 total yards and led the Dolphins with 10 touchdowns last season. However, the negotiations are on-going, and his landing spot could change before Wednesday, which is the first day NFL teams can sign players to contracts."

A stumbling block for the Cowboys could be Miller's salary demands, the Dallas Morning News reports.

"If Dallas is in fact one of those landing spots, would a Miller-Cowboys pairing be feasible financially?" the Morning News reported. "According to another report, the 24-year-old Miller is seeking DeMarco Murray-like figures. And, as most all know by now, the Cowboys were unwilling to offer Murray a contract that averaged more than $6 million per season after he led the NFL in rushing in 2014."

Dallas, however, also saw the effect on its offense without a Murray-type running back. Even in the games Romo played before his shoulder injuries knocked him out. The Cowboys were lucky to win the season-opener against the Giants.

And they saw how far behind they were -- with Romo starting before he got hurt again -- behind the NFC Super Bowl representative Carolina Panthers on Thanksgiving in a 33-14 loss.

That could make the Cowboys willing to reconsider their parameters for a top-flight running back -- especially one that's four years younger than Murray was and has considerable fewer miles.

Murray has less than half the carries since college as Murray, the Morning News reported.

Jones was hoping to make a splash in free agency by bringing in Johnny Manziel before he knocked himself out of the league with a domestic violence allegation to go along with his reaffirmed reputation of his love for the nightlife.

Lamar Miller has more than enough credibility to become a suitable replacement for Manziel.
