Saul "Canelo" Alvarez believes his fight against Gennady Golovkin will eventually take place, but the Mexican boxing superstar wants the bout to happen on his terms.
Both fighters have expressed willingness to face each other later this year, but the weight limit is still an issue at this point. Canelo wants the fight at 155 pounds, which has been the catch weight in his last four bouts. Golovkin, on the other hand, is pushing for the full middleweight limit of 160 pounds.
Oscar De La Hoya: Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin Fight Will Eventually Happen
Alvarez, the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, insisted that he is not willing to give concessions to Golovkin. While he did not specifically mention the weight issue, Canelo and his camp have been very firm on their stance, reiterating that the fight will only happen at a catchweight of 155 pounds.
"I've given many concessions, I've given up many advantages to get to this point in my career where I'm at," Alvarez said in a news conference via USA Today. "One thing I'm not going to do is I'm not going to give up any concessions or any advantages to GGG. I'm in the position now that I deserve and I earned my sport."
Alvarez is set to defend his title against Amir Khan on May 7 at T-Mobile Arena. If he wins, he will have no other choice but to face Golovkin if he wants to keep the title. In the event Alvarez declines to face Golovkin, he will be stripped off his title, while Golovkin will be declared as new champion.
Amir Khan Confident He Will Win Against Canelo Alvarez
When asked about a possible date, Alvarez is unsure if the bout will happen this year.
"Is it going to happen this year? I don't know, I can't say. I don't negotiate my fights," Alvarez added. "But if the conditions are right, and the conditions are met, all the details of the fight, it's cool, let's do it."
Golovkin, who has not lost in 34 professional fights and has knocked out 31 opponents, needs to win against Dominic Wade on April 23 to maintain his status as the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight title.
