The debate rages on whether the quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be on the 49ers' roster on April 1.

A curious report has surfaced about the team's desires to take a quarterback early in the NFL Draft -- curious because of the quarterback mentioned and a seeming resemblence to a certain player currently wearing No. 7 in San Francisco.

Sam Bradford Re-Signing With Philly May Have Sealed Colin Kaepernick's Fate In San Fran

"According to a source I talked to at the NFL Scouting Combine, Trent Baalke, general manager of San Francisco 49ers, has put a priority on quarterback Connor Cook of Michigan State, despite the fact that Cook has taken so much criticism throughout the year for his personality, difficulties and didn't throw the ball all that well during combine drills on Saturday," Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported. "The fact is that Cook had a shoulder injury going into the combine, so that's considered one of the reasons why he didn't throw as well."

Wait, what? Is Cole talking about Cook or Kaepernick?

49ers Never Actually Committed To Colin Kaepernick Without Him Taking Pay Cut

Consider SFGate.com's recent assessment of Kaepernick.

"Despite what the 49ers may say, the relationship between Kaepernick and the team was strained," the report states. "Players lost confidence in him after the entire offense was geared around him last year and he faltered.

"He alienated more players and the organization by opting for season-ending surgery rather than backing up Blaine Gabbert for the good of the team.

"... But ultimately, Kaepernick might not have been victim of a coaching change, or his own failings in reading of a defense or going through a progression. Kaepernick's undoing might have been his inability to relate to his teammates, coaches and the organization. ... His lack of leadership became glaringly evident when Gabbert took over."

SFGate added that Kaepernick's work ethic, while good, focused only on the things he likes to do, such as working out.

"Reportedly, Gabbert watched five times as much film on his team issued ipad than Kaepernick did."

Cole said Cook was attractive as a second-round pick to the 49ers, who want to use their first-rounder to address another need. Sounds like the 49ers like Kaepernick so much that they've targeted a clone as his successor.
