Byron Scott is a genius.

The embattled Lakers coach, who is on the verge of guiding the franchise to consecutive historically bad seasons, has installed a new offensive set, according to Lakers Nation.

D'Angelo Russell, Byron Scott Still Not On Same Page

It was the same set the Lakers young players Jordan Clarkson, D'Angelo Russell, Larry Nance Jr., Anthony Brown and Tarik Black used when they played on the Lakers' Summer League team. And it could be just the leverage Scott needs to retain his job at least for one more year.

Scott explained the rationale for the switch 60 games into the seaosn.

Lakers Players Reveal Why 2015-16 Shouldn't Have Been All About Kobe

"I was really kind of torn on even putting it in now, or waiting till the summer to go over it again with the younger guys and add it, but the coaching staff was like you might as well give them a taste of it now, and let's get them familiar with it the next 20-plus games and then going into the summer, they'll have a much better feel for it," Scott said, according to Lakers Nation.

So now if the young players show progression in the last 20 games, and they should as they refamiliarize themselves with the offense, that's a reason to keep Scott. If the team struggles, then it was because Scott implemented the offense for the future and it will pay dividends in 2016-17.

Plus, if the Lakers were thinking about hiring another coach with another system, having the players learn yet another scheme could delay their progress next season, so why not give Scott one more year?

And if general manager Mitch Kupchak and executive vice president Jim Buss ask why Scott didn't install that offense in the first place?

Because it reduces isolation plays, which is detrimental to Kobe Bryant's game.

Brilliant.

It may not be enough to say Scott's job after the Lakers set a record for fewest wins in 2014-15, which Los Angeles is on pace to break this season, but it does force Kupchak and Buss to put more thought into retaining Scott.
