Despite the obvious benefits of playing in a Chip Kelly offense, the reasons for Colin Kaepernick's trade requests are becoming more obvious.

And Kelly may be wondering what mess he got himself involved with.

Colin Kaepernick's Trade Request After Team Said He's Staying In S.F. Could Hurt His Trade Value

The San Francisco 49ers never meant to suggest that they were committed to retaining the disgruntled quarterback at his current $11.9 million salary that becomes guaranteed on April 1, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Tim Kawakami.

The columnist suggested that 49ers owner Jed York and general manager Trent Baalke tend to stick to a script when disseminating information about the team that sometimes clouds the meaning of what their message is.

Based On One Stat, 49ers Would Look Foolish Starting Blaine Gabbert Over Colin Kaepernick

They did it again with regard to Kaepernick's immediate future.

"OK, if you still trust York and Baalke implicitly, and apparently many of you still do, you were convinced (Wednesday) that Colin Kaepernick will absolutely be on the 49ers roster in 2016 because, when asked that specifically at his NFL Scouting Combine presser, Baalke said: 'Absolutely.'

"... Baalke isn't really saying that the 49ers have decided 100% that they're bringing Kaepernick back and happy to guarantee his $11.9M salary once he remains on the roster on April 1.

"They don't announce anything except on their own terms -- 'Are we ever transparent in what we do?' is the truest and most significant statement of Baalke's 49ers career -- and if they're forced to answer a question about something they're not ready to discuss, they usually lie and dissemble.

"That's not what 'absolutely' means. Absolutely means that as of now Kaepernick has a contract for 2016 (unless they cut him), the 49ers haven't decided precisely what to do yet and they still have weeks to go before the deadline.

"Kaepernick might be on the roster April 1, he might not. There are still things to weigh and discussions to be had."

In that scenario, Baalke then apparently did not let Kelly in on his 49erspeak because Kelly, too had said he expected Kaepernick to be on the roster for him to evaluate.

Another Kawakami report suggested that news of Kaepernick's trade request coming out shortly after Kelly and Baalke talked about retaining the quarterback was not coincidental.

If San Francisco is trying to get out of an already-team-friendly contract that Kaepernick signed, he has every reason to want to get out of Dodge.

The only thing more intriguing about what team makes inquiries about Kaepernick is what happens if the 49ers can't orchestrate a trade? If they keep Kap on the roster, the demise of daytime dramas may be overstated because that would be one interesting franchise to follow.
