The Cleveland Cavalier's acquistion of Channing Frye didn't ignite a groundswell of support for their title hopes this season.

But a combination of Channing Frye and Joe Johnson may at least start a conversation.

LeBron James' Praise For Gregg Popovich Is Ominous Sign For Cavaliers

Johnson, the Brooklyn Nets veteran who will become a free agent in the summer, will join the Cavaliers if he agrees on a buyout with the Nets, according to cleveland.com.

"Should Johnson, 34, obtain a buyout of his $25 million salary for the season, Cleveland would be his next destination, sources with knowledge of the dialogue told cleveland.com.

Cavaliers Should've Listened To Lakers About LeBron-For-Kobe Trade

"Brooklyn is aware of the ballpark figure it would take for Johnson to agree to a buyout, a source said. The way sources characterize the situation, Brooklyn has to decide whether it wants to help the Cavaliers, or allow Johnson to play out his contract as-is."

The 15th-year veteran is still and above-average Joe, collecting 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game this season for the Nets, who are competing for the worst record in the NBA this season.

He would bolster a Cavs roster that includes Channing Frye, whom the team acquired from the Orlando Magic to help the big three of LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving.

While optimism reigned in Cleveland, a different picture about the prospects of Johnson joining the Cavaliers emerged in New York.

Johnson, who struggled under fired coach Lionel Hollins, has bounced back under interim coach Tony Brown and would interest teams such as Miami and Cleveland if bought out by March 1, the deadline for being playoff eligible," the New York Post reported. "But with Johnson owed more than $8 million for the rest of the season, a buyout seems unlikely."

Johnson isn't in a rush to get out of town, either, the Post added.

"I've never ruled Brooklyn out," Johnson said. "Coming back to Brooklyn, I've never ruled that out."

But he also said, "I just said I want to play on a winning team, play for a winner. That's pretty much it."

Giving Cavaliers fans hope.
