Knicks president Phil Jackson made an interesting move this week to fire head coach Derek Fisher, his protégé, in the second year of Fisher’s five-year deal. Jackson seems like he has set the Knicks up for a bright future, but he may not stick around to see it.

Lakers president Jeanie Buss, who is in a longtime relationship with Jackson, may clean house in the front office per Larry Brown Sports. If so, she may want Jackson to be part of that front office, and not on the other side of the country.

Derek Fisher, Gloria Govan May Be On The Outs

Jackson has said before that his long-distance relationship with Buss “isn’t ideal.” Jackson said to The New York Post “It was not something I would necessarily bargain to do, to live away from the companion I’ve had for 15 years. But she said, ‘We’ll be fine.’ And there is something about being fruitful, purposeful in life.’’

The major snag in this narrative is Jackson’s opt-out clause with the Knicks. Contrary to speculation, Jackson can’t opt out of the deal until 2017, which would leave Buss’ Lakers rudderless for an entire season, and one that will be crucial because of how young their core is.

Dennis Rodman Should Coach The Kings, Not The Knicks

Jackson would also have to leave the Knicks who have a former scoring champion still in the tail-end of his prime, Carmelo Anthony, and a 7’3 sharpshooting big man, Kristaps Porzingis, who could win Rookie of the Year.
